The Raval is one of the most emblematic neighborhoods in the city of Barcelona. It has become a hub of multiculturalism and diversity, creating a space for the creation of art and avant-garde movements of all kinds.

Botero’s Cat
Today, it is one of the most emblematic and recognizable elements of the Raval neighbourhood. Visited by tourists and revered by neighbours for whom seeing it every day has become part of their routine. But this love story between cat and neighbourhood was not planned or guaranteed. Initially, the sculpture was acquired by the Barcelona City Council in 1987, which decided to place it in the Ciutadella Park, perhaps to be able to familiarize itself with the city by interacting with its companions from the animal world of the Barcelona Zoo.
For the 1992 Olympics it was moved next to the Olympic Stadium and a few years later it was moved to a small square behind the Drassanes. Despite experiencing three different locations, Botero’s Cat had not yet found its home. But finally, in 2003, it was moved to the Rambla del Raval, and we cannot imagine it anywhere else. Especially since it is only a 1-minute walk from Ravalora’t!
As its name suggests, the 7-metre-long and 2-metre-high cat is the work of Fernando Botero, a famous Colombian painter and sculptor who became one of the most internationally renowned contemporary artists for his unique way of depicting figures: corpulent and rounded.

The Raval neighbourhood is at its best when you experience the life that runs through its streets and establishments, such as bars and restaurants, but every now and then getting away from the hustle and bustle and taking a break might be just what you need. Or maybe you work in the area and need a place to disconnect from your work for 30 minutes.
The Barceló Raval hotel has a 360º viewing terrace on its top floor that offers excellent panoramic views of Barcelona. In addition, the rooftop has a small pool and in the evenings there is usually a DJ playing live music. It is a great place to relax and enjoy cocktails or a glass of wine surrounded by an elegant atmosphere.
Bar Marsella
Without a doubt, one of the most significant establishments in the Raval district is the Bar Marsella, which opened its doors in 1820, maintaining the original decoration to this day. In the past, it became a point of interest for renowned artists such as Salvador Dalí, Picasso, and even the American writer Ernest Hemingway.
Its star product is absinthe, a high-proof alcoholic drink with a radiant green colour. The consumption of this drink is accompanied by its own preparation at the Bar Marsella. A brand of absinthe is chosen, a sugar cube is placed on a spoon over the alcoholic drink, it is poured and sprinkled with cold water. The process, more than a drink, is a ceremony.
In 2013, the bar was close to closing its doors, as the owner of the building wanted to sell it. But supported by its neighbours, who collected more than 10,000 signatures against its closure, it managed to remain open, as the Barcelona city council ended up buying the building for 1.1 million euros.
Carrer dels Tallers
Carrer dels Talleres connects Plaça de la Universidad with Las Ramblas. Running parallel to Carrer Pelai, known for its establishments of recognizable brands such as C&A and Starbucks, Carrer dels Tallers represents the rebellious brother, with more alternative shops and a bohemian style.
At the beginning of the street we find Plaça de Castella, an open space with bars where you can sit down and have a drink. In the center of the square we see the Parroquia de Sant Pere Nolasc Mercedaris, named a cultural asset of local interest. Another place worth mentioning in the square is Holala! Plaza, a second-hand clothing store.
If we go further in, we will enter the shopping area, with an eclectic selection of second-hand vintage clothing, CDs and vinyl records and musical instruments, among other things. As well as historic businesses in the neighborhood such as the Llenas stationery-printing shop, family-run since the beginning of the last century and with a charm full of nostalgia.
